Front desk clerks have many diverse duties on their shoulders, as theirs is generally the initial face guests see when they enter the lobby.
Hotels generally require front desk clerks to be a minimum of 18 years in age. Since the position is typically geared toward beginners, extensive hotel employment experience often isn’t mandatory. While high school diplomas are sometimes imperative, a more extensive educational background frequently isn’t necessary, although there are always exceptions. If a job candidate happens to have a work background in jobs similar to hotel front desk clerks, she might have an edge over others, however.

The goal of a front desk clerk is to help make a guest’s experience as relaxed and comfortable as possible. Front desk clerks also have to be able to juggle many tasks simultaneously, all while keeping a calm and poised demeanor. Multitasking is the name of the game in the hospitality world. Hotel front desk clerks have to be professional, tidy and polished in appearance, too.
As far as time requirements go, hotel front desk clerk jobs differ. Some are full-time jobs, five days a week. Others are on a part-time basis. According to literature published by Facts on File, Inc., roughly 30 percent of all hotel front desk clerks are part-time employees. Shifts can differ, too. Many are assigned the night shift, while many work more traditional hours, going into work in the morning and leaving in the late afternoon or early evening.
